Abstract

Until recently, pregnancy and childbirth had been thought of as the exclusive domain of women with female reproductive bodies. New critiques of the ways pregnancy and childbirth are conceived and managed challenged this essentialist notion of the female (and male) body, exposing existing, but often unrecognised, tensions within feminism. In this chapter we identify these tensions and show how they are related to critical studies of risk in maternity care.
