Abstract

This study explores older adults' perceptions of anthropomorphized assistive robots, particularly in the context of increasing care needs for this demographic. Utilizing a virtual reality environment, participants interacted with four distinct anthropomorphized assistive robots. The preliminary findings, presented as a conceptual framework, reveal a diverse spectrum of roles these devices assume in older adults' lives. These roles are categorized based on relationship tolerance and the degree of autonomy perceived by users. Notably, participants displayed a preference for devices embodying pet-like qualities, aligning with their desire for familiarity and comfort. By delving into these nuanced roles, this study contributes to our theoretical understanding while simultaneously providing invaluable design criteria for technology catering to the unique preferences and needs of this demographic.
