Abstract
This chapter retraces the cinematic representation of Łódź, the third-largest city in Poland (after Warsaw and Kraków). The purpose of the chapter is to survey the changes which Łódź underwent, from the late 19th century, when it became the main industrial center on the Russian part of partitioned Poland, through to the period of state socialism, when its status as an important industrial center consolidated, to the post-Communist period, when it became synonymous with a ‘city with no qualities.’
