Abstract
Metallomics is an emerging interdisciplinary field that focuses on the comprehensive analysis of the roles, uptake, transport, storage, and function of metal ions in biological systems. This introductory chapter provides an overview of essential metals in the brain, emphasizing their significance within the broader context of neuroscience, including how metal dyshomeostasis contributes to the pathogenesis of neurological disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and Wilson’s disease. By highlighting the intersection of metal biology with neurochemistry and neuropathology, this chapter underscores the relevance of metallomics in advancing our understanding of brain function and in identifying novel diagnostic and therapeutic targets for neurological diseases.
